location shots

This is one of the locations we were hoping to film at for our photoshoot. In the photoshoot the male character is going to be standing in the middle of the tunnel, using the rule of thirds putting him in the middle, so that you are focused on the main person. The focus on the main person shows that they are successful. By using a tunnel, it is quite an underground sort of setting and shows the dangerous edgy side to this type of music and portrays the genre and famous artists well. (Such as Eminem)

We also wish to film in Central London, to show a successful part of the world and to show the roots of where the person grew up. London is quite a suburban area and suits the genre well. By filming in London, it shows the powerful and ruch part of England, the big lights and flash cars you see in London are sterotypical of Hip Hop music videos, especially the underground scene music videos. Were going to film the jogging scene on the bridge to show that he is going for a quick jog in London town.

We are going to take a shot of the sun coming up over london  and take the shot on London Bridge. This shot will be effective as it will show the phrase 'Good Morning' which is the name of the song, by having a shot that relates to the song, the viewer will automatically relate the scene to the song lyrics.

Costume, Props and Makeup.

For our music video we are going to use lots of different Equipment, Props, Costumes and MakeUp.
The list of Costumes that we are going to need for our music video is:

COSTUME
  • Baggy Tshirt
  • Baggy Jeans
  • Trainers
  • Big bling jewellery

Location Permission

This is the evidence that we have the rights to film in London. This is the details of the permission and guidance we need to film in London, unfortunately you cannot email you can only ring up and find out, so we phoned up and found that we can film for half an hour for free, as long as we get the permission to film. This is the only evidence we could show as it is a phone call conversation.

Photoshoot plan

Photo Shoot Plan Emily

CD Cover Designs

We are going to do a photo shoot in Raynes Park in a tunnel to show the artists album, we are going to use a dark setting so that it is quite a mysterious atmosphere, also the dark lighting is going to be effective as it shows the artist as quite intimidating also.
This is the front cover for our Album by the artist 'Frame' that we have created. The artist is holding out his hands making the shape of 'a frame'. We decided to do this so that it relates to the artists name and so that the artist is unique in some way.

This is the back cover, Where we all decided that to keep the them of the frame made by his hands on both the front and the back, and the back cover is going to show the back view of the front cover (The back of his hands) with a list of all the tracks in between the hands which can be made on Photoshop.

The extra panel is going to show the artist and a close up of their face to show what they look like and it will also be quite an intimidating picture to show the power of the artist.

The inside center of the album cover is going the artist standing in the middle of the tunnel, hence how we came up with the album name of 'Tunnel Vision'.

The bottom three shots show the large picture we are going to have stretched across the inside left/centre/right and it shows the artist standing in a tunnel dead in the middle, which shows that it relates to the album name of tunnel vision. He is going to have his hands in his pockets and be looking down his nose at the camera to show the camera that he has power and it also shows him as successful. Our group decided this would also be a good idea so that we could show the underground artist within him, rather than a mainstream artist such as Jay-Z, we wanted to relate him to someone less well known and commercial such as Scorcher.

Storyboards

This is the anamatic for our song good morning. It is made up of the storyboard and put together into an animatic. Each shot on the screen shows the amount of time that the shot will be shown for, in time with the music.

List of props, Costumes, make-up and equipment.

Concept

What is the concept you have decided on.  Sketchs, locations costume special effects
This is the sort of costume that we have decided on, I drew the sketch of one of the characters who will be rapping one verse of the song. He says a line 'while they get their Ipod Shuffle on', so we have decided to incorporate the I pod into the scene, by having the artist jogging with headphones on, and singing to the camera while it looks like he is going for a jog. We have decided to then dress his costume as something you would go for a jog in, so tracksuit bottoms or lose trousers, and a T-shirt and trainers. The Ipod and headphones are also part of the costume.

We decided that one of the locations was going to be a park bench, where the artist would wake up, and think about the night before. The idea is that the artist never got home that night, and that people are texting him worried, (where are you, 'good morning' etc) The location has to look bright and there needs to be good lighting because it shows that it is early in the morning. We are also going to use props such as empty beer cans and rubbish to show that he was probably intoxicated the night before and the audience get an idea of what happened the night before.

We have also decided to use a special effect within our music video. We want to use the title in the song by having lots of shots that are related to the phrase 'Good Morning'. We are planning on going into London and filming the sun coming up and then when we put it into final cut we are going to speed it up so that we see the sun rise over the whole of london in a few seconds. This represents the idea of good morning.

Image Annotation

Hip Hop artists have a certain stereotypical way of looking. They like to represent the money they own and like to show that they are successful by wearing lots of jewellery that is big and outrageous so that people notice it. It is a statement of wealth. Often in their music videos they use exotic destinations to set the music video or use expensive looking items such as big cars. And as you can see from the photo above of the three artists on a boat they have a huge helicopter behind them which shows them as dangerous and makes them all interesting artists.
Some other Hip Hop artists use other stereotypes, which relate more to Rap music. For instance they will wear simplistic clothing with just jewellery to focus on and will set the music video in an underground scene, a dark tunnel, a shady area. This is so the audience can focus solely on the lyrics of the song and focus on the meaning behind them.
They also commonly have lots of tattoos to show that they are different from other artists and it is also a statement of power. To be covered in meaningful tattoos it shows the artist as a strong character and makes them look scary and intimidating.

Lyrics Annotation

Song Details

We decided to use the song 'Good Morning' By Scorcher, Wretch 32 and Kay Young to make our music video to as we feel that the lyrics of this song are very fitting to the genre of Hip Hop as the lyrics themselves also promote the artists, and they talk about thier success.
We also chose this song because it doesnt already have a music video to it and we think it is a good representation of a stereotypical Hip Hop song as it talks about money and success.

Technical Tutorials- Final Cut

Final Cut.
We used a green screen and filmed a music video recording the song 'Last Friday Night- Katy Perry'. We recorded it on three different cameras including using the Fig Rig to have hand held close ups of the artists faces. We then uploaded the three different bits of footage onto final cut and put them together to create the music video draft. We wanted to see how final cut worked and also how the three cameras were effective when creating the music video.
We put a green screen in the background so that if we wanted we could change the background to what we wanted, it was useful using the green screen and using final cut as it was practice for when we use final cut to edit our proper music video.

Roles

The responsibilities within our group were distributed evenly. We decided to give each member a group of jobs to do each and then if we all stick to what we've been given we will be able to film a good music video successfully.

My role within the making of the music videos is Costume, Props and Makeup. I have to arrange who is going to be wearing what whilst shooting the music video and the props that we are going to use throughout the shooting of the music video and the photo shoot. The make up that the artists are going to wear is going to be minimalistic, the artists are probably not going to wear any makeup as the male artists within hip hop videos tend to not wear much make up. They are going to be wearing a reasonably plain t-shirt and jeans, and then they are going to be wearing a sort of statement necklace that shows their success and power. It also shows that they are making money as an artist. The only props that are needed are the Ipod and the use of a park bench. The IPod has been provided by me.

Drew's role within making the music video is to film the entire music video using three different cameras so that we can edit the three videos together, and so that we have plenty of spare footage to play around with to create a successful music video. He also has the role of organising the cameras so that we have them booked for the dates in our shooting schedule. So that we definitely have a camera for when we need to film.

Jordan's role within making the music video is to be the main character in the music video and also to recruit all the other members of the music video so that we have characters to fit the genre exactly. He then has to ask them if they will take part in the music video and has to get them to sign the talent release form.

Initial Ideas

We decided upon the theme of Hip Hop music videos as we think that it will be interesting to make and have been influenced by lots of musicians work and think it will be an effective music video to make. We discussed all of our initial ideas as a group and made a mind map on paper, we have then extended this by making individual mind maps on Bubbl as well. We worked together as a group to make our mind map and everyone shared valuble ideas together.

Audience Research 2

Audience Research 1

Advertisement Research.

This advert is for an new alcoholic drink that is out. The male holding the bottle of drink is a male rapper. He is represented as rich and with a high authority as he is wearing a big watch and stylish clothing. The sunglasses are also a common sign of money because you cannot see thier eyes therefore they have authority and power over the audience.
This is an advert for a clothing brand called Akoo, and to boost the amount of people who notice the advert they have also used B.O.B in the advert. This encourages a larger audience to look at the clothes because they want to be wearing the same clothes as a hip hop artist who is famous. This also encourages people to like B.O.B as it shows him wearing clothes that non famous people would wear.

This is just a simple one page advert for the artist Bronze Nazareth. It shows him as a big powerful artist and has his name written in a large font to promote him. It then states where you can buy/download the album from and when it is released. This is effective for the artist as the artist can get a larger audience from a magazine advert.

CD Cover Research

This is an album cover by the band D12. It shows a hand holding a tight grip on the globe. This could represent that D12 want to be known worldwide and that they think they have a grip on the world. This sort of picture shows them with status and power. The hand holding the world has a ring with D12 to show the hand holding the world is 'D12's hand, and that its D12 holding the hand. The dark colours in the background and the stars are bright which could represent that D12 are stars. The title D12 World shows that D12 are trying to dominate the world rather than just one country with their music. The font style used looks like the style of tattoo writing or graffiti style writing which fits in with the genre of Hip Hop well as they often have lots of tattoos. The hand holding up the world is of a darker skinned origin which is very common within Hip-Hop and Rap music as it is predominantly black artists such as the band D12, and Tinie Tempah below.
This is a similar album cover to the D12 album cover as it shows the artist Tinie Tempah holding what looks like one city in his arms. He is infact holding lots of different parts of differnent cities all mixed together. This also shows that he has control over lots of different cities and places all over the world. He has a wristband and a big watch on which is very common jewelery of this genre of music as they like to wear 'Bling' to show off that they have a lot of money and can buy large bits of jewellery. The font of the writing on the Album Cover is stereotypical of this artist as it is the font that he uses on most of his albums. He is also wearing a pari of sunglasses which makes him look mysterious and because you cannot see his eyes you dont know what esxpression he has, this makes the album cover intriguing and a member of the public would want to pick it up and look at it. The lighting in this photo is focused on the artist to show that he is the main feature of the cover and he is most important. The light looks glittery and as if it is shimmering, this makes him look like a star and gives him a higher status as it looks like he is rich.

This album cover is different to the other two covers that i have analysed. The artist/rapper Eminem is situated in the middle of the cover but is smaller. He is appearing to bow down infront of an audience on stage, this could be at one of his shows. The word 'ENCORE' is written is his sigtnature writing which is with the 'E' backwards. The brand Eminem is always written with one of the E's backwards aswell, this helps to brand him as an artist and makes him different to other artists. There are two lights shining onto Eminem and he is the brightest part of the album cover which means anyone looking at the album cover, thier eyes are immediately drawn to him and what hes doing. He is breaking the norm of looking extrememly powerful and covered in 'bling' as he is wearing a smart suit and is bowing down appearing to thank his audience. This shows a nicer side to him, and makes him look like a nice artist who respects his audience and his fans rather than it just being about looking powerful and having money. By breaking that stereotype it makes him more appealing to a wider audience.

Conventions of a Hip Hop/Rap Music Video

Through researching HipHop music and artists, i have found the key conventions of a Hip Hop/Rap music videos;

-The music videos are set in mysterious places or simple places with a lot of rap artists. The larger Hip Hop artists such as 50 Cent have the location as parties or a club. This type of location shows money and power which is what all Hip Hop artists thrive to look like.

This is a shot from 50 Cents 'In Da Club' Hip Hop song, and this shot shows the artist at a club with lots of drinks and as its a busy club it makes him look popular.

-In Hip Hop music videos the star of the music video (The Artists) try to look as powerful as possible and look like they have as much money as possible. This puts them above other arists as it shows they are a good musician and are successful.

These are screen grabs from T.I's music video whatever you like, in this video he shows everything to do with money. (Jewellery, swimming pool, private jets, big cars)

- Another convention of a Hip Hop music video is the artist or the group are shown constantly throughout the video, the band is a brand in itself. By showing the audience the band or artist all the time it creates the illusion of seeing the artist in person.

This is Eminem in his music video 'Just Lose It', he is dressed as different characters in different parts of the music video.

-Another convention of a Hip hop/ Rap music video is that the camera shots are generally long shots or establishing shots so that you can see the whole area where the music video is set and also you get to see all the money that has been spent on the music video or how much money the artist is making.

These are two of the opening shots in Dr.Dre's music video 'i need a doctor'. They show an expensiv looking holiday resort and show money and power within these shots.

- Commonly in Hip Hop music videos there are lots of scantily clad women who are dancing in clubs and around the Hip Hop/Rap artists. This shows the artist as powerul and has lots of pretty women dancing for them/around them. This shows that the artist is also attractive.

This is four screen grabs from Dizzee Rascals music video 'Holiday' The whole video is just Dizzee Rascal on holiday with some friends and dancing with women who are all wearing swimwear. This attracts a large audience as it gives a false image that if you go on holiday you will meet lots of women who are all in t hier swimsuits dancing around you.
