Audience Research 2

Audience Research 1

Advertisement Research.

This advert is for an new alcoholic drink that is out. The male holding the bottle of drink is a male rapper. He is represented as rich and with a high authority as he is wearing a big watch and stylish clothing. The sunglasses are also a common sign of money because you cannot see thier eyes therefore they have authority and power over the audience.
This is an advert for a clothing brand called Akoo, and to boost the amount of people who notice the advert they have also used B.O.B in the advert. This encourages a larger audience to look at the clothes because they want to be wearing the same clothes as a hip hop artist who is famous. This also encourages people to like B.O.B as it shows him wearing clothes that non famous people would wear.

This is just a simple one page advert for the artist Bronze Nazareth. It shows him as a big powerful artist and has his name written in a large font to promote him. It then states where you can buy/download the album from and when it is released. This is effective for the artist as the artist can get a larger audience from a magazine advert.

CD Cover Research

This is an album cover by the band D12. It shows a hand holding a tight grip on the globe. This could represent that D12 want to be known worldwide and that they think they have a grip on the world. This sort of picture shows them with status and power. The hand holding the world has a ring with D12 to show the hand holding the world is 'D12's hand, and that its D12 holding the hand. The dark colours in the background and the stars are bright which could represent that D12 are stars. The title D12 World shows that D12 are trying to dominate the world rather than just one country with their music. The font style used looks like the style of tattoo writing or graffiti style writing which fits in with the genre of Hip Hop well as they often have lots of tattoos. The hand holding up the world is of a darker skinned origin which is very common within Hip-Hop and Rap music as it is predominantly black artists such as the band D12, and Tinie Tempah below.
This is a similar album cover to the D12 album cover as it shows the artist Tinie Tempah holding what looks like one city in his arms. He is infact holding lots of different parts of differnent cities all mixed together. This also shows that he has control over lots of different cities and places all over the world. He has a wristband and a big watch on which is very common jewelery of this genre of music as they like to wear 'Bling' to show off that they have a lot of money and can buy large bits of jewellery. The font of the writing on the Album Cover is stereotypical of this artist as it is the font that he uses on most of his albums. He is also wearing a pari of sunglasses which makes him look mysterious and because you cannot see his eyes you dont know what esxpression he has, this makes the album cover intriguing and a member of the public would want to pick it up and look at it. The lighting in this photo is focused on the artist to show that he is the main feature of the cover and he is most important. The light looks glittery and as if it is shimmering, this makes him look like a star and gives him a higher status as it looks like he is rich.

This album cover is different to the other two covers that i have analysed. The artist/rapper Eminem is situated in the middle of the cover but is smaller. He is appearing to bow down infront of an audience on stage, this could be at one of his shows. The word 'ENCORE' is written is his sigtnature writing which is with the 'E' backwards. The brand Eminem is always written with one of the E's backwards aswell, this helps to brand him as an artist and makes him different to other artists. There are two lights shining onto Eminem and he is the brightest part of the album cover which means anyone looking at the album cover, thier eyes are immediately drawn to him and what hes doing. He is breaking the norm of looking extrememly powerful and covered in 'bling' as he is wearing a smart suit and is bowing down appearing to thank his audience. This shows a nicer side to him, and makes him look like a nice artist who respects his audience and his fans rather than it just being about looking powerful and having money. By breaking that stereotype it makes him more appealing to a wider audience.

Conventions of a Hip Hop/Rap Music Video

Through researching HipHop music and artists, i have found the key conventions of a Hip Hop/Rap music videos;

-The music videos are set in mysterious places or simple places with a lot of rap artists. The larger Hip Hop artists such as 50 Cent have the location as parties or a club. This type of location shows money and power which is what all Hip Hop artists thrive to look like.

This is a shot from 50 Cents 'In Da Club' Hip Hop song, and this shot shows the artist at a club with lots of drinks and as its a busy club it makes him look popular.

-In Hip Hop music videos the star of the music video (The Artists) try to look as powerful as possible and look like they have as much money as possible. This puts them above other arists as it shows they are a good musician and are successful.

These are screen grabs from T.I's music video whatever you like, in this video he shows everything to do with money. (Jewellery, swimming pool, private jets, big cars)

- Another convention of a Hip Hop music video is the artist or the group are shown constantly throughout the video, the band is a brand in itself. By showing the audience the band or artist all the time it creates the illusion of seeing the artist in person.

This is Eminem in his music video 'Just Lose It', he is dressed as different characters in different parts of the music video.

-Another convention of a Hip hop/ Rap music video is that the camera shots are generally long shots or establishing shots so that you can see the whole area where the music video is set and also you get to see all the money that has been spent on the music video or how much money the artist is making.

These are two of the opening shots in Dr.Dre's music video 'i need a doctor'. They show an expensiv looking holiday resort and show money and power within these shots.

- Commonly in Hip Hop music videos there are lots of scantily clad women who are dancing in clubs and around the Hip Hop/Rap artists. This shows the artist as powerul and has lots of pretty women dancing for them/around them. This shows that the artist is also attractive.

This is four screen grabs from Dizzee Rascals music video 'Holiday' The whole video is just Dizzee Rascal on holiday with some friends and dancing with women who are all wearing swimwear. This attracts a large audience as it gives a false image that if you go on holiday you will meet lots of women who are all in t hier swimsuits dancing around you.

Analysis of 5 Music Videos of chosen genre; Hip-Hop/Rap

Cinematography:
The cinematography for this music video is successful because there are a variety of different shots used there are lots of mid shots of the main character which is very conventional of a hip hop video because they focus on the main singer/artist and the music video is based around them. There are also close ups of the main artist 'Lil Wayne's tattoos which is also conventional of a hip-hop music video as it shows them as 'cool' with tattoos.

Mise En Scene:
The Mise En Scene is key in the video, Lil Wayne has diamonds on his teeth, this is an example of showing off his money, and having money gives him status. Secondly it is set in a dim lit area which shows that they are either doing something wrong, or it gives the music video an edge which makes it feel dangerous and like the men in the video are 'bad men', But it also gives Rick Ross and Lil Wayne status within the video.

Sound:
The way the song in this music video is portrayed in this video makes the artist look angry, and serious about the lyrics. The lyrics are not funny and they are serious, and this is portrayed in the way the music has been made and how the artists perform it. The artists also lip sync this song perfectly, so it looks as if they are actually performing this song in that location, this is stereotypical of a hip-hop music video because the artists usually sing to the camera and don't have a particular storyline behind it.

Editing:
The editing in this music video is also stereotypical of a hip hop video, as it cuts on the beat of the music, and there are often fast paced cuts that make the music video more interesting and appear a bit hectic. Secondly there is also lots of tracking shots that show the main singer performing the song, and you see the artist from all artists.

Cinematography:
The cinematography in this music video is similar to the first except the location is different. There are lots of head shots of the main people singing to show the 'star' within the music video  which is common within hip hop music videos as the star is the main focus, and they have status by being the main focus. The money they earn is also a focus and that's why they are the main person in the video because there is no point focusing on anyone else because the star believes its what the audience want to see.

Mise En Scene:
They use product placement in this music video, as Eminem is in the music video they have Dr. Dre's 'beats' logo on the laptop in the very first shot. This shows a unity between all of the rappers in this video. The Mise En Scene is meant to be overwhelming in this music video because it shows lots of really bright flashing lights and big flames which shows money was used to create the music video, it has the feel of it being professional and shows time went into making it.

Sound:
There are lots of different rap artists within this music video and they are all performing in front of different backgrounds and it gives the impression of them performing in different areas of the arena they are in. All of the artists look serious about the lyrics that they are lip syncing to. By lip syncing it shows the artists as professional and serious about the music industry. Like most other music videos there isn't a storyline to the music video, its just the different artists performing their part of the song.

Editing:
At the beginning of the music video there is a sequence where drake is singing/lip syncing his part of the song, and they have edited it so that they have layered a close up of his face and a full body shot together and in both of the shots he is lip syncing to the music. The cuts in the music videos are mostly fades so they don't need to be directly on a beat. They also have edited in shots of a famous basketball player and they are showing his life story as well as showing the artists performing.

Cinematography:
The cinematography in this video looks effective as they use close ups of Ed Sheeran holding the fire in his hand, and then a close up of fire itself. And by using these shots in sequence it gives the music video a strange touch to it, and it looks effective by focusing something random and abstract within a serious music video. There is also a tracking shot of the four main characters within the music video to show which artists are involved and to give the artists credit for their performances.

Mise En Scene:
The different characters appear to be wearing normal casual clothing which doesn't particularly add to the scene. They are all sitting back to back with wires coming out of each others heads and there is people in the background who are portrayed as doctors, and through what they are wearing and the props used it shows that the four artists are being tested on.

Sound:
The female artist Yasmin, sings the chorus and she sings it in an overly dramatic way and lip syncs perfectly. The other three singers lip syncing are singing their parts of the song with emotion and particularly Devlin's part he seems angry and that portrays his lyrics. The song is all about young people, and by having new young up and coming artists involved it portrays the lyrics exactly.

Editing:
The editing in this music video is simple on the beat cuts and they are effective as they are in time with the music and give it a steady beat. Each character has lots of different shots of them from different angles strung together quickly to show its a fast paced song.

Cinematography:
There are mostly full body shots of the two main singers Eminem and Royce da 5''9, There are also shots of the area they are perfomring the song in and close ups of the area so that the audience know where it is set. There are no establishing shots or master shots to show the area in which the music video is set so the audience are left to guess where the videos set.

Mise En Scene:
The Mise En Scene of this music video is quite stereotypical to Hip Hop music as they are dressed wearing baggy clothes and some bling. The location where they are recording the music video is also stereotypical as it looks mysterious, and looks quite plain and no particular area is given off. This gives it an underground, behind the scenes look because they aren't in the middle of an expensive area, they are focusing more on the lyrics than the money and location of this music video.

Sound:
The music in this video is stereotypical to Hip Hop music, it is a music video based on the lyrics of the song solely. The artists rap the words and lip sync perfectly with the soundtrack.

Editing:
The editing in this music video is effective in helping the audience to remember the lyrics of the song. Whilst the song is playing and they are lip syncing they act out moving about words on the screen. The words are edited onto the screen in lots of different fonts, and large. This is effective because as the artists lip sync the song it plays in the background and the words come up on the screen which makes it more memorable.

Cinematography:
In this music video at the beginning there are lots of unsteady camera shots such as mid shots and close ups, they are effective because they show the audience the dangerous side to them, and it gives the music video that 'Hip Hop feel' because its mysterious and different.

Mise En Scene:
The Mise En Scene of this music video is very stereotypical for a hip hop music video as the main singer is dressed in lots of diamonds and sparkly 'bling'. This is common for a hip hop music video as it shows money and power within the music business. By showing you have lots of expensive clothes and belongings it shows you as a successful musician as you are making money. They use bright yellow lighting which resembles a gold colour, and this reflects onto the smoke created by the smoke machines. By using effective lighting and effects such as the smoke machine it makes them look very proffessional.

Sound:
In the music video Chris Brown is dancing in time to the soundtrack, and is lip syncing in time as well. Hip Hop videos commonly lip sync the track as it shows them as enjoying their music and being proffessional artists. The other rapper Busta Rhymes also lip syncs his part and the camera focuses just on him sitting on a step so that the audience can focus on just the artist performing and thats what sells the music video.

Editing:
The editing of this music video is very stereotypical the cuts within it are often on the beat and so the editing is in time with the music. The camera moves in time to what the artist is doing, there is a shot where Busta Rhymes shakes his hands around, so the camera shakes around aswell to mirror what he is doing.

Theories 3

Andrew Goodwin
'Dancing in the Distraction Factory'
There are three different ways Andrew Goodwin says that a music video can be edited.

Using ILLUSTRATION:
  • The music will always be cut on the beat
  • Lyrics will illustrate the literal meaning or feeling of the lyrics, often just with the band singing and dancing
  • The band image is band setup, (singing/dancing/playing instruments) and dressed as you would expect a band to be dressed of that genre.

Using AMPLIFICATION:
  • Film cuts on the beat but sometimes off the beat also to emphasise certain features.
  • The lyrics are amplified by images, a specific narrative may be used, that would not necessarily be picked up from reading the lyrics alone.
  • The bands image takes the fictional roles in the narrative.
Using DISJUNCTURE:
  • Film cuts off the beat and sometimes can create the effect of a bad music video rather than an abstract one.
  • Images which do not relate to lyrics used, sometimes used by bands who are already very well established who can afford to take this sort of risk
  • The band take on an image that's completely opposite of their expected image, e.g the lead singer of Texas dressed up as Elvis.
  • Another example of disjuncture is the well known electro pop band Daft Punk with the song Da Funk, which has the main character dressed as a dog which is completely random and not relative to the song but they are a well known established band who can afford to take this risk.
This music video is by Lady Gaga and in this she is dressed as a male character which is risky, and is only successful because she is a well known artist and she can afford to take these sorts of risks.

Theories 2.

Carol Vernallis:
She wrote a piece called 'The Kindest Cut'
She analysed editing in music videos compared to Hollywood films.
She identified distinct approaches to each, she discussed their impact on narrative(structure) and representation.

Vernallis believed that the music video world and the Hollywood film world is different;
Music Videos use a Multiplicity of incomplete sometimes obscure paths whereas Hollywood films use single clear paths through the world of the film.

Music videos order of shots is unconventional and shifts more freely between shots, there is not typical shot order, whereas the order of shots in a Hollywood film differs as its conventional, typical shot order is when the film begins there is an establishing shot and then it leads onto a different range of shots so that the audience know the setting and it sets the scene.

In Music Videos time, space, character and narrative are revealed incompletely as it isn't key to a music video whereas in Hollywood movies, There is a unity of space and time to show every shot in the same location as to not confuse the audience.

Music videos also use Discontinuity- pop videos draw us away from the narrative by foregrounding other structures and elements, e.g Music and the Star. In Hollywood films, continuity is key as the film draws us into the narrative.

Music videos also use visual hooks which create continuity (Motif), linked by a single feature, unified by figure, shape, colour and setting. Sometimes all the elements are equal, (Colour, edit, star) and sometimes one is dominant.

Shots of the artist in a music video will encourage us to piece together a 'phantasmagorical body' (a body made up in our mind of all shots of bits of bodies we see.
(For example Kylie Minogue)In this video at the beginning there are lots of shots of different parts of Kylie Minogue's body and the audience then build up this idea that she has the perfect 'phantasmagorical' body.

One of Carol Vernallis most famous quotes from her works is;
''In video our attention to the song shapes the way we perceive an image, but to an equal extent, what we attend to in the image helps to determine how we hear the music''

Theories 1

BORDWELL AND THOMPSON

Bordwell and Thompson's main focus was 'Hollywood Film' editing, they noticed how the shots could link to the next in different ways.

As a pair they noticed four different relations between shots in editing:
-Graphic
-Spatial
-Temporal
-Rhythmic

Graphic editing:
Film is VISUAL, so the transitions between shots can be linked graphically, using 'pictorial qualities'.
The different shots are related by patterns of light and dark, volume and shape, and movement and static. The first shot, followed by the next shot use one of these similarities and they can be used to create 'smooth continuity' or 'abrubt contrast' within a series of shots. For example in this scene in psycho the film created by Alfred Hitchcock The shape of the plug hole then has a 'graphic match' with the characters eye, the round shape of the plug hole fades into the round shape of the eye.

There are three different ways in which shots can be linked graphically:

The different shots are linked by GRAPHIC MATCH: which means the linkage of shots by graphic similarities.

GRAPHIC CONTINUITY: centre of interest within the shot is constant throughout the cut, the lighting levels are maintained and strong colour clashes are avoided.

Lastly there is the opposite of graphic continuity which is GRAPHIC DISCONTINUITY: Which contrasts colour and footage types, movement and stillness, placement and shape of the figures in focus.

Rhythmic Editing:
Rhythmic editing considers the duration of shots, the length of each in relation and its pattern involving accent, beat and tempo.
By having specific emphasis on particular shots, it gives different effects. If all of the shots are the same length then it gives the sequence a steady metrical beat.
Using a rapid series of shots it doesn't give the mind much time for thought. These are just two examples of rhythmic editing but there are many other ways of using rhythm within editing to create effect.

Spatial Editing:
Spatial editing concerns film 'space', for example setting and location and relation between and manipulation of different points through similarity, difference and development.

Continuity editing: analytical space via an establishing shot, followed by a smaller range of shots, such as close ups and mid shots. By using an establishing shot you show the space of the setting and then get a wider idea of the space its set by using lots of other shots.
The Kuleshov effect- No establishing shot is used, it leads to the interference of a single locale, a spatial whole based on seeing only proportions of a certain space. Audiences with piece together the shots and make a connective relationship within the shots also called 'Spatial Coexist'
This music video in the beginning is all filmed within one space for example, Tinchy Stryder, Dappy and the female dancers are all performing in front of one space, not at the same time at different times.

Temporal Editing:
Temporal editing concerns time of action and contributes to the plots. Manipulation of story time/order/duration and frequency.
An example I use to explain this is in the Bourne Ultimatum films, Jason Bourne doesn't use the toilet once, but he obviously uses the toilet but as it isn't important it isn't shown in the film AKA Temporal Editing.

The order and presentation of events can be manipulated which signifies changes in the story plot. e.g flashbacks increases the story knowledge and flash forwards create enigma. (A problem you wait/hope to be solved)

Another form of temporal editing is to take out the stuff we don't need to see within a film/video which is called Ellipsis. Other ways are punctuation shot changes, e.g dissolve, wipe and fade signals. Empty frames e.g figure of interest seen moving out of frame, cuts to empty frame where character moves into it.

For example in this Calvin Harris music video he looks at pictures and then it flashes back to the night before so the audience can see what the pictures entail. (Flashbacks increase the story knowledge)

Low Budget Ideas

The fix- Just got paid.

Mise En Scene: The mise en scene of this music video is very stereotypical to traditional boy bands such as Westlife etc. The young boys are dressed to impress, they are wearing similar trousers and t shirts so that they look like a united boy band. This is a pop song and this is represented in the way that the characters look and act, by all looking similar and looking very groomed and well looked after they are meant to appear to be attractive to the female audience and attract them by being a typical boyband.
In this shot the group is using an over the shoulder shot to show him in the mirror. In the left hand side of the screen there is a small box with Mtv written in it and the name of the song and the band that this media group have created. This is effective within a low budget music video and were also going to do it in our video, too show the company that we are performing for and it is also a common trait within proffessional music videos.
This is a shot of the replica boyband, performing the song and dancing in time to the music. Dancing as a boyband is stereotypical to a pop song like this, If our group does a pop song then a dance routine would be beneficial as it is a common convention of most pop songs.

This shot is of the main boy within the band lip syncing exactly in the music straight into the camera. This is also a common convention of a pop video. They often have the boy band members all singing into the camera so that you get a full view of thier face and their facial expressions. The actor has to look happy and likes hes enjoying singing the song.

This shot shows another member of the boyband yet again lip syncing and singing to the camera. In the background there is lighting and they look like proffessional lighting as the rest of the room is in darkness except for the bright spot lights. This creates a proffessional feel to the song and makes it look like its been set up with thought and proffessionaly.
A-Ha Imogen Heap. By Greg Bernstein & Joshua Moss

This music video was low budget and was created at A2 level by two students.
The first picture i have used of the titles, which is the first clip to appear on the screen is effective because it makes the music video look more real and believable. The credits at the beginning of this music video are the same as a normal music video. This shows proffessionalism with the music video editing.

The first location of the music video is what looks like a silhouette of a person, and they appear to be in a forest. By using lots of different shot types and locations it makes the music video more interesting to watch, the viewer wants to keep watching it because of the random clips and locations all strung together.

The third picture is of another location which is a jewellry box in the forest which is yet another location, and it adds variety and a unique sense to the music video. This makes the video more abstract and different. It makes it interesting and this is a good tecnique to use when you dont want to create a cheesy storyline.

The fourth picture represents the good mise-en-scene because the whole video is in black and white and then the nails are bright red. This makes that particular shot very effective and proffessional looking because the shot is composed well. This would be good for our music video too because it keeps the viewers attention and makes the music video attractive to watch.

Conventions Of A Music Video.

To make a successful music video you need to include all of the key music video conventions. All popular Music Videos and succesful music videos are filled with the key music video conventions.

Some of these music video conventions are:
    • Camera Movement: The camera movement needs to reflect the song and the meaning behind the song. Also the camera movement has to show the lip syncing in time so is a vital part of a music video. For example in this video it is a sad song and the camera movement reflects the mood of the song and the genre of the song. For example there is a slow motion tilt of the artists body and this shows that things are moving slowly for her and hr facial expression and clothing that we get the full view of represents the mood and genre of the music video.

    • Camera Shots: The camera shots in a music video show the emotions on each of the characters faces, and it helps it to relate to the music video and the meaning behind the video. It also helps to show where the music video is set, for instance a long shot shows the whole scenery of the place where its set. For example close ups of artists of actors faces show how they are feeling within the music video and it reflects on what the genre of the music video is. The close up of this artists face with the completely dark background shows the genre of the music video as rock music video as it is a common convention.

    • Mise En Scene: The Mise En Scene is key because it shows what the characters are wearing and the key scenery and props, it then represents the theme of the music video and it becomes clear what is happening in the music video and how it relates to the song. For example in this Slipknot music video, the artists are all wearing their masks and dark clothing which signatures something scary; which is one of the conventions of heavy metal is extreme clothing and hair and darker clothing.

    • A Storyline: The story to a song has to be represented in the music video. For instance in a lot of pop videos the music video is about love and relationship problems and a lot of them show a story line to reflect the lyrics. For example in the music video by Ciara and Enrique Iglesias the two musicians are acting out an argument in reflection to the lyrics.

    Analysis of Rock Video 3

    Nickelback- Rockstar.

    Cinematography:
This music video is made up of lots of mid shots of people all singing various lines in the song, for each lines of the song a different person sings a line. Some of the people in it are famous and other just normal people. This intrigues the viewer into wanting to see who is in the video. Some high angle shots are also used to give certain people more authority over others in the music video, for example the police officer so it puts the viewer in a smaller position. This promotes the video because it shows how important the police force are and how important they are.

    Sound:
The sound in the music video is very important because all of the lyrics are sung by different people, the lip syncing in this music video had to be exact so that the next line went smoothly into the next. You dont see the band performing only members of the public and well known people. This promotes the band as a commercial rock band that even celebrities have heard of. Also by having members of the public singing it shyows them as interested in thier fans and the public.

    Mise En Scene:
The Mise En Scene of the music video varies alot and lots of different locations and costumes are used. There is an old man who is sitting in his chair singing the lyrics and he looks like he either used to be a rockstar or still is one. This relates diretly to the genre of rock by having someone in the video who looks like they enjoy rock music. Secondly all of the characters in the musiv video all look like they are having a good time and are enjoying the music. By showing the public in normal clothing and not dressing them up or having the band in the video like a stereotypical rock video it makes you want to watch it and your intrigues into who else is in the video.

    Editing:
The editing in this music video is quite simple and has logic, For each new line of the song a different character lip syncs in time to the music the next line. It jump cuts between each location and person to show that its a different line of the song.

    Analysis Of Rock Video 2

Cinematography: There are a variety of different camera angles and shots within this music video. In the opening of he music video there is a close up of different peoples faces who are fans of the band 30 Seconds To Mars. They are all talking about fate and relating what they are saying to the music video, by using close ups of fans and not just the band it promotes the band as based on the fans rather than all about money, it shows they care about thier fans. There are also long shots of the audiences at thier gigs and shows, by showing more of the audience again, it promotes them as being interested in thier fans the most, and they are key to this music video.

    Sound:
At the beginning of the music video there are clips of the fans saying little speech's, and they look slightly sad, by having the fans talking on the video it shows how close the band are with thier fans. It is also effective because it makes you listen to what they are saying and you try and relate it to the song. Secondly they use the same shot of the fans faces during the breakdown of the song where he says 'no, no' and the same fans shout it as the words appear over thier face, this promotes the bands song, showing that lots of other people know it. Also by showing shots of the crowd enjoying his music and knowing all of the words it shows them as a successful well known band.

    Mise En scene:
The Mise En Scene in this is key to showing what genre of music is trying to be represented, Jared Leto the main singer of the band has bright pink hair which shows him as very alternative and different to pop, it gives the video a rock edge to it because its a bit different and daring, not very mainstream like pop is. The lighting used is all strobe lights and lareg flashing lights to give it an overwhelming feel and makes the music seem that much bigger and better.

    Editing:
The editing in this music video looks very high tech and modern, lots of jump shots are used, it jumps from each different city where theyve done shows and shows the audience enjoying thier music, by jump shotting from place to place it shows how popular they are around the world, which also ppromotes them as a rock band. Secondly they use fastforward/doubletime to sshow the people walking past the streets and all the people that are there to see 30 seconds to mars shows. This is good for promoting the band by showing that they do lots of gigs and lots of peopole turn up for those gigs.

    Analysis Of Rock Videos 1

This is facedown by a band called Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.
This promotes the band by using lots of high technology video techniques.
Cinematography: Lots of different camera angles and shots are used to make this video a rock success. There is a mid-shot of the male guitarist, who appears to be performig in a 'rock-type' way, this shows the audience what kind of song they are listening to through the acting and camera shots focusing on the guitarist. There is also a close up of the female characters back where there is a bruise, this intrigues the viewer into the topic of the music video and song, and also makes them want to carry on watching to find out what the whole story line is. It is also effective because it adresses a serious issue, instead of the stereotypical rock songs about girls and money, it has a serious edge to it.

Sound: The actual song 'Facedown' relates to the video in so many ways. Its the story of an abusive relationship, and trying to get out of it. It critisises men who beat/hurt thier wifes/girlfriends. The lyrics of the song relate directly to the music video backing up the meaning behind the song, for example the lyrics; 'do you feel like a man when you push her around, do you feel better now, as she falls to the ground' Whilst these lyrics are playing the room around the female character is being all smashed up but by an invisible person, (the abusive male) and its showing the destructive path that he leaves.

    Mise En Scene:
The mise en scene is carefully created in this music video to show the story line effectively. The props used are key to relating to the song, the mirrors and lamps and bed are being smashed up to show the abuse that the male character inflicts. This key use of props relates exactly to the storyline of the song. I gives it a reinforced meaning. Secondly the lighting is a very dark, dim lighted set, which shows that it isnt a happy topic and makes the setting and mood more relative to the song. Also the band members all have props of guitars/drums/microphones, to show that they are members of as band that are performing the songs and by having the instruments it makes the bands performance more believable and by showing them all performing and looking like they are enjoying performing it makes the song better to watch.

    Editing:
The editing in this rock video is one of my favourite videos, they smash things up whilst the girl is sitting in the room and the stuff smashes all around her, by cross editing and putting other clips into one another they have the effect of stuff being thrown about by someone who isnt there but because of the lyrics and the editing together the audience immediately know its the abusive character. By having no person and just actions it shows the trail of disaster left by the abusive character. The stuff being thrown around but not being able to see anyone shows that it is part of her everyday life and it happens all around her, yet people do not see it. This is effective editing at showing a real issue within modern times.
