Analysis of 5 Music Videos of chosen genre; Hip-Hop/Rap

Cinematography:
The cinematography for this music video is successful because there are a variety of different shots used there are lots of mid shots of the main character which is very conventional of a hip hop video because they focus on the main singer/artist and the music video is based around them. There are also close ups of the main artist 'Lil Wayne's tattoos which is also conventional of a hip-hop music video as it shows them as 'cool' with tattoos.

Mise En Scene:
The Mise En Scene is key in the video, Lil Wayne has diamonds on his teeth, this is an example of showing off his money, and having money gives him status. Secondly it is set in a dim lit area which shows that they are either doing something wrong, or it gives the music video an edge which makes it feel dangerous and like the men in the video are 'bad men', But it also gives Rick Ross and Lil Wayne status within the video.

Sound:
The way the song in this music video is portrayed in this video makes the artist look angry, and serious about the lyrics. The lyrics are not funny and they are serious, and this is portrayed in the way the music has been made and how the artists perform it. The artists also lip sync this song perfectly, so it looks as if they are actually performing this song in that location, this is stereotypical of a hip-hop music video because the artists usually sing to the camera and don't have a particular storyline behind it.

Editing:
The editing in this music video is also stereotypical of a hip hop video, as it cuts on the beat of the music, and there are often fast paced cuts that make the music video more interesting and appear a bit hectic. Secondly there is also lots of tracking shots that show the main singer performing the song, and you see the artist from all artists.

Cinematography:
The cinematography in this music video is similar to the first except the location is different. There are lots of head shots of the main people singing to show the 'star' within the music video  which is common within hip hop music videos as the star is the main focus, and they have status by being the main focus. The money they earn is also a focus and that's why they are the main person in the video because there is no point focusing on anyone else because the star believes its what the audience want to see.

Mise En Scene:
They use product placement in this music video, as Eminem is in the music video they have Dr. Dre's 'beats' logo on the laptop in the very first shot. This shows a unity between all of the rappers in this video. The Mise En Scene is meant to be overwhelming in this music video because it shows lots of really bright flashing lights and big flames which shows money was used to create the music video, it has the feel of it being professional and shows time went into making it.

Sound:
There are lots of different rap artists within this music video and they are all performing in front of different backgrounds and it gives the impression of them performing in different areas of the arena they are in. All of the artists look serious about the lyrics that they are lip syncing to. By lip syncing it shows the artists as professional and serious about the music industry. Like most other music videos there isn't a storyline to the music video, its just the different artists performing their part of the song.

Editing:
At the beginning of the music video there is a sequence where drake is singing/lip syncing his part of the song, and they have edited it so that they have layered a close up of his face and a full body shot together and in both of the shots he is lip syncing to the music. The cuts in the music videos are mostly fades so they don't need to be directly on a beat. They also have edited in shots of a famous basketball player and they are showing his life story as well as showing the artists performing.

Cinematography:
The cinematography in this video looks effective as they use close ups of Ed Sheeran holding the fire in his hand, and then a close up of fire itself. And by using these shots in sequence it gives the music video a strange touch to it, and it looks effective by focusing something random and abstract within a serious music video. There is also a tracking shot of the four main characters within the music video to show which artists are involved and to give the artists credit for their performances.

Mise En Scene:
The different characters appear to be wearing normal casual clothing which doesn't particularly add to the scene. They are all sitting back to back with wires coming out of each others heads and there is people in the background who are portrayed as doctors, and through what they are wearing and the props used it shows that the four artists are being tested on.

Sound:
The female artist Yasmin, sings the chorus and she sings it in an overly dramatic way and lip syncs perfectly. The other three singers lip syncing are singing their parts of the song with emotion and particularly Devlin's part he seems angry and that portrays his lyrics. The song is all about young people, and by having new young up and coming artists involved it portrays the lyrics exactly.

Editing:
The editing in this music video is simple on the beat cuts and they are effective as they are in time with the music and give it a steady beat. Each character has lots of different shots of them from different angles strung together quickly to show its a fast paced song.

Cinematography:
There are mostly full body shots of the two main singers Eminem and Royce da 5''9, There are also shots of the area they are perfomring the song in and close ups of the area so that the audience know where it is set. There are no establishing shots or master shots to show the area in which the music video is set so the audience are left to guess where the videos set.

Mise En Scene:
The Mise En Scene of this music video is quite stereotypical to Hip Hop music as they are dressed wearing baggy clothes and some bling. The location where they are recording the music video is also stereotypical as it looks mysterious, and looks quite plain and no particular area is given off. This gives it an underground, behind the scenes look because they aren't in the middle of an expensive area, they are focusing more on the lyrics than the money and location of this music video.

Sound:
The music in this video is stereotypical to Hip Hop music, it is a music video based on the lyrics of the song solely. The artists rap the words and lip sync perfectly with the soundtrack.

Editing:
The editing in this music video is effective in helping the audience to remember the lyrics of the song. Whilst the song is playing and they are lip syncing they act out moving about words on the screen. The words are edited onto the screen in lots of different fonts, and large. This is effective because as the artists lip sync the song it plays in the background and the words come up on the screen which makes it more memorable.

Cinematography:
In this music video at the beginning there are lots of unsteady camera shots such as mid shots and close ups, they are effective because they show the audience the dangerous side to them, and it gives the music video that 'Hip Hop feel' because its mysterious and different.

Mise En Scene:
The Mise En Scene of this music video is very stereotypical for a hip hop music video as the main singer is dressed in lots of diamonds and sparkly 'bling'. This is common for a hip hop music video as it shows money and power within the music business. By showing you have lots of expensive clothes and belongings it shows you as a successful musician as you are making money. They use bright yellow lighting which resembles a gold colour, and this reflects onto the smoke created by the smoke machines. By using effective lighting and effects such as the smoke machine it makes them look very proffessional.

Sound:
In the music video Chris Brown is dancing in time to the soundtrack, and is lip syncing in time as well. Hip Hop videos commonly lip sync the track as it shows them as enjoying their music and being proffessional artists. The other rapper Busta Rhymes also lip syncs his part and the camera focuses just on him sitting on a step so that the audience can focus on just the artist performing and thats what sells the music video.

Editing:
The editing of this music video is very stereotypical the cuts within it are often on the beat and so the editing is in time with the music. The camera moves in time to what the artist is doing, there is a shot where Busta Rhymes shakes his hands around, so the camera shakes around aswell to mirror what he is doing.
