Analysis Of Rock Videos 1

This is facedown by a band called Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.
This promotes the band by using lots of high technology video techniques.
Cinematography: Lots of different camera angles and shots are used to make this video a rock success. There is a mid-shot of the male guitarist, who appears to be performig in a 'rock-type' way, this shows the audience what kind of song they are listening to through the acting and camera shots focusing on the guitarist. There is also a close up of the female characters back where there is a bruise, this intrigues the viewer into the topic of the music video and song, and also makes them want to carry on watching to find out what the whole story line is. It is also effective because it adresses a serious issue, instead of the stereotypical rock songs about girls and money, it has a serious edge to it.

Sound: The actual song 'Facedown' relates to the video in so many ways. Its the story of an abusive relationship, and trying to get out of it. It critisises men who beat/hurt thier wifes/girlfriends. The lyrics of the song relate directly to the music video backing up the meaning behind the song, for example the lyrics; 'do you feel like a man when you push her around, do you feel better now, as she falls to the ground' Whilst these lyrics are playing the room around the female character is being all smashed up but by an invisible person, (the abusive male) and its showing the destructive path that he leaves.

Mise En Scene:
The mise en scene is carefully created in this music video to show the story line effectively. The props used are key to relating to the song, the mirrors and lamps and bed are being smashed up to show the abuse that the male character inflicts. This key use of props relates exactly to the storyline of the song. I gives it a reinforced meaning. Secondly the lighting is a very dark, dim lighted set, which shows that it isnt a happy topic and makes the setting and mood more relative to the song. Also the band members all have props of guitars/drums/microphones, to show that they are members of as band that are performing the songs and by having the instruments it makes the bands performance more believable and by showing them all performing and looking like they are enjoying performing it makes the song better to watch.

Editing:
The editing in this rock video is one of my favourite videos, they smash things up whilst the girl is sitting in the room and the stuff smashes all around her, by cross editing and putting other clips into one another they have the effect of stuff being thrown about by someone who isnt there but because of the lyrics and the editing together the audience immediately know its the abusive character. By having no person and just actions it shows the trail of disaster left by the abusive character. The stuff being thrown around but not being able to see anyone shows that it is part of her everyday life and it happens all around her, yet people do not see it. This is effective editing at showing a real issue within modern times.
